Russian History, Sitka Shoreline and Timber Worker's Trail

Hike Description:

This hike also begins at Old Sitka State Park, the site of the first Russian Fort built in Sitka. This is a place where the ferocity and skill of Sitka’s native Tlingit people was capably demonstrated. After a short tour of the park we cross the Starrigavan estuary bridge for hike along the shore and then it is into the forest on a trail built by timber workers who lost their jobs when the pulp mill closed in Sitka. The timber workers took pride in their work and the hand hewn log steps and bridges show their skill. This trail holds a fascinating and inspiring story about how a town came together to build the beautiful Sitka Trail system is response to a serious challenge to the local economy. The charming loop trail winds up and down through the forest with something new to enjoy at every turn. A nice amount of exercise and great fun on this trail
