Russian History, Forest Mystery

Hike Description:

This hike emphasizes interpretation over exercise. We begin at historic “Old Sitka State Park” the site of the original Russian fort and the victorious rout of the Russians by the Sitka’s Tlingit warriors. We walk a short distance to the trailhead and your guide leads you through classic Southeastern Alaska ecosystems of mixed hemlock-spruce forest, open meadows and back along the beautiful Starrigavan estuary. We stop frequently to explore and experience our surroundings, discovering why the Tongass Rainforest is so memorably special.  This is an easy enjoyable walk with lots to see and experience within a short distance.

Difficulty Level:

Our easiest hike. No steps and very gentle grades. No mud. If you can walk one mile easily you can do this hike no problem. If you are a history buff, a birder or a closet naturalist you will really enjoy this hike.

Hike distance:

Just under 2.5 miles

Trail tread:

All gravel or boardwalk. No mud

Time:

One hour hike. 25 minute drive each way.

What to bring:

Comfortable footwear with non slip tread. On a dry day you can do this hike in your Nikes, when it’s wet, you can still do this hike in your Nikes. Bring your camera and binoculars, if you have them. A daypack is nice so you have a place to put your hat and jacket when you get warmed up. We supply “True” Alaska bottled water. We also carry a supply of extra daypacks if you need to borrow one and “emergency” ponchos for unexpected liquid sunshine events.
